Just How Good is Your Website?

Clear Objectives

Your Website should have clear business objectives. When I did my study of fifty-two e-business initiatives, clear business objectives was one of the commonalities of the projects that were successful.

Business objectives relate to increasing revenue, decreasing expenses, or simply making things work better.

Give yourself a ten on this one if you have three clear business objectives for your Website, and if you regularly monitor performance against those objectives.

Don't kid yourself here. Your objectives should be specific and measurable. They should clearly state how what you are looking for in terms of Website performance, contributes to overall business and strategic objectives.

You can improve this measurement if you set clear business objectives for your site that support your overall store strategy. If you haven't got a store strategy in place, start right now to put one together, then do the Web work.

Don't forget that just having good objectives isn't enough. You also have to measure your performance against those objectives using log analysis and standard business measures. Then you have to adjust either your targets or your performance. Nothing runs on autopilot.
