Do You Use Metatags Effectively?
Metatags are tags which appear in the underlying code of your site and describe your overall site to the automated devices that check them out. The two that matter the most to you are the description metatag and the keyword metatag.
The description metatag contains language that search engines use when they display search results where you've been found. What that means is that the description metatag gives you an opportunity to tell people exactly what's on your site in a way that compels them to click through to it.
The keyword metatag is the metatag that search engines use to index your site. That's where you put the kinds of words that folks will use when they search for you.
You have two choices. You can put these metatags in yourself and have some control over how you're found and described. Or, you can leave it up to whatever the search engine designer thinks is best. I prefer the first option.
There's an added benefit to using metatags as well. Metatags make your site-specific search engine more effective. They enable you to set priorities, speed up searches, and generally make your search engine something that visitors really like.
Give yourself ten points if you have metatags on every page.
