Trends in Music Product Retailing

This is the Support Site for one of two programs that I gave at the NAMM Summer Session in Nashville on July 19, 2003. The other program was New Ways the Web can Boost Your Sales.

Note: Click here to download the note-taking handout for the session. It's in Adobe Acrobat format.

This program was not a presentation. Instead, it was a process. In fact, it was the very same process that I use when I’m working with an individual client (usually as part of a strategic planning process) or a small group of executives from different companies. The process was adapted slightly for the convention setting where it was presented.

We began by having each participant construct a Key Events Timeline. Some of the key events they identified will be listed on this site within a week after the program.

Once we had discussed the timelines, we moved on to Trend Identification. This included a definition of what a trend is. For this portion of the program we divided into groups of six or less. The trends they identified will be listed on this site within a week after the program.

Trend Ranking was the third and final section of the program. The groups were asked to rank the trends they had identified during the second part of the program. Their rankings and a final composite will appear on this site within a week after the program.

If you’d like to be notified when the key events, trends and rankings are posted on this site, click here. You can also download the program handout which includes some trends identified before the program by clicking here.

You will probably get the most from this Web site if you move through it in the same sequence as the actual program, beginning with the first section on the Key Events Timeline. That way you’ll be able to see how you can adapt the process for your own use.

If you’d rather jump to a particular section that interests you, use the menu on the right side of this page.
