Here are some tips for making an Knowledge Management project (by any name) a success.
Have a clear goal in mind. Without a good idea of where you're going, it's unlikely that you'll arrive where you want. In my experience you should hold off on the final formulation of the goal until you've run some smaller projects.
Get the right people on your team. Maybe this should be the first step. It's certainly important. Remember to consider what we know about group dynamics when you put your team together. Include technical, management and social skills for sure, but make sure there's political clout on board, too.
Make sure you have a realistic description of your starting point. You should know what your strengths and weaknesses are so you can build on the former and make the latter irrelevant. Use tools like Social Network Analysis to understand your operation better.
Consider a process with two parts. One part is the "low hanging fruit" part. It generates early and dramatic results that build bandwagon effect and keep the project moving.
The other part is the Big Hairy Audacious Goal part of the project. That's the part that pulls everyone forward and that will have the biggest impact on the organization.
