Like many people, Tony Schwartz sees himself as "spiritual." Also like many people, he hasn't found what he's looking for in the churches, synagogues and mosques he's been exposed to.
He says in the book that, increasingly, he finds that dogmatic and inflexible. He figures there must be something out there that will fill his needs among all the movements and practices that don't find themselves primarily within church walls. So he sets out to investigate, to see what's "out there." This book is about what he finds.
So, Mr. Schwartz starts his odyssey for understanding and for feeling good by beginning meditation. He finds both good things and questions. The questions lead him on to a variety of different practices that might come under the heading of The Human Potential Movement, or "New Age.%
The result is an interesting journey for Schwartz and an interesting book for the rest of us. He has taken the time to investigate and experience of variety of things. Then, he's written about them well, so that he's both informed me and kept me interested. The result is an excellent book that covers a relatively complete range of the different disciplines and practices available in the United States to obtain peace and wisdom.
I'm really jealous of Tony Schwartz. Not only has he gone out and investigated all kinds of things I'm curious about, but he's tried them out and gotten paid for it. As far as I'm concerned, it's a dream assignment. I wish I'd done that. But I didn't, and we're all lucky that Tony Schwartz did because this book is the next best thing to being there.
