Getting a Great
Business Website
Hosting

CThere are three basic issues to address when you consider where your website will be hosted.

Expense

Hosting your own site means paying for the telecommunications connections necessary for good site performance. Look at this factor first, since it is often the factor that convinces small to midsized businesses to house their site at an Internet Service Provider.

Expense is also a factor in security and site management, since there are hardware, software, personnel, and operating costs to be considered.

Security

You will need to have the equipment, software and expertise necessary to assure that your communications and sensitive information remains safe. This includes regularly updating software and responding to security advisories

Site Management

You will need to do routine site management. This involves making sure that files and scripts are working properly and that problems are identified and solved early.

If you already have a network in place, your existing staff may be able to handle the additional work with limited budgetary impact. If you do not have a network and information technology staff now, it probably makes sense to host your website at a service provider.
